About Volunteering

It’s not only clients whose lives are enhanced by Meals on Wheels. People who give time to Meals on Wheels say volunteering has added a new dimension to their lives. The satisfaction of doing something practical yet personal is a reward in itself.

Volunteers are crucial to the operation of every Meals on Wheels organisation. They drive the cars and deliver the meals and other food services to clients, as well as helping run the service by serving on the management committee. The committee receives government funding for the running of the organisation at the local level and is responsible for its governance.

Volunteers are the lifeblood of our organisation and we depend so heavily on their support. As at September 2017, we have over 70 volunteers but we are looking to grow this to over 100 to help support our programs and the growing number of clients in our local government area.

Types of Volunteer Activities

The volunteering tasks vary depending on the particular skills you may offer and / or what is available. The typical work Camden Meals on Wheels have volunteers that deliver meals to clients using a volunteer’s own car or a Meals on Wheels vehicle, or acting as a partner to someone else. Most deliveries are done in pairs. Other ways volunteers can help include being on the local management committee, lending a hand with general office duties or assisting in our other programs e.g. Meal Mates (one on one social support in their home), Little Corner Community Café (LCCC) which is a group social support program or it could be helping a person do their shopping or go to the hairdresser.

Becoming a Volunteer

Camden Meals on Wheels will usually complete a short interview when you offer your help to explain what they expect from you and what you can expect from them, then you will come for a group interview in the coming days / weeks. Camden Meals on Wheels require references and we need to complete a police check. These are designed to protect the clients whose homes you will be visiting. To get started, please complete the volunteer application form on this page.

New volunteers receive an induction and ongoing training. Also experienced volunteers are often happy to share some of their experience and advice.
